Program Information:
The Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI) provides a rich collaborative environment for postgraduate students, providing them with the skills and latest innovative techniques in imaging technology. CAI houses the most comprehensive and advanced range of magnetic resonance instrumentation in the southern hemisphere, including 3 and 7 Tesla Siemens whole body human, a large bore PET-CT scanner and a wide range of small animal equipment including PET-MR, PET-CT, 9.4 and 16.4 Tesla pre-clinical systems.

CAI has a series of postgraduate programs designed for radiographers, biomedical engineers and other health professionals working with Magnetic Resonance Imaging equipment. Students learn within a multidisciplinary environment, reflecting the expertise and experience of our teaching team of radiographers, medical practitioners, medical physicists, chemists and engineers. Programs can be studied online, on-campus or a combination of both.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Distance Education Certificate:
This program is designed to provide practicing technologists with the knowledge, skills and competence necessary to become practicing Magnetic Resonance Imaging technologists. It also serves to prepare the technologists to write a National Certification exam set by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT).

Students wishing to complete the MR program must declare their intention after successful completion of MIMG 7200. Student must then complete the two remaining MRI courses (MIMG 7201 and MIMG 7202), and the clinical practicum (MIMG 6200) within 18 months of finishing MRI 7200. Students may take the 4 sectional anatomy courses at any time before or after declaring their intention to complete the MR program (in accordance with BCIT policy).

As of January 2005 all students beginning the MRI Program have to complete a 4 month practicum (MIMG 6200).

Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A One-Year Ontario College Graduate Certificate Program
As a professional currently practising Medical Radiation Technologist in the Nuclear Medicine, Radiography or Radiation Therapy or Ultrasound disciplines, you probably already have command of an impressive skill-set. Your skills are valuable, in demand, and relied upon for accurate diagnosing. Lives are at stake, and the powerful tools used in the diagnostic field require highly-skilled and highly trained specialists. If you’re intrigued by taking your already dynamic skill-set to a higher level, expand your career potenial with Fanshawe’s Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) program.
The most alluring aspect of this program is its flexibility. We understand you’re busy. That’s why the MRI program is a hybrid face-to-face/online format, so you’ll be able to maintain your employment while expanding your career potential as a future MRI technologist. You’ll combine in-class meetings one day per week with online learning activities, and following completion of two 16-week semesters, you’ll participate in a 16-week clinical practicum at an affiliated hospital site.
Plus, if you’re already employed or being sponsored by a site, you might be eligible for first priority to do your clinical practicum placement there. Along the way, you’ll prepare to write the MRI National Certification Examinations as set by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). The MRI program is also fully accredited by the Canadian Medical Association and recognized by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences

An advanced diploma program for qualified technologists in radiography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy or ultrasound.

We are currently the only Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Accredited Programme in Canada. Our part-time programme involves coming to the school every other weekend (Friday evening and Saturday) for 15 months of didactic instruction. The Distance Education programme involves on-line instruction and class interaction in a specially developed ‘e-classroom’ for 15 months of didactic instruction. Because of the part-time nature of these programmes, students can continue working in their regular full-time jobs while studying the didactic component. The 3 month clinical component which finalizes the programme is a full-time practicum.

We accept 20-25 students per class. Part-time courses begin in January. Distance courses begin in May.
International students have graduated through our Distance Education programme.

MRI Specialist Course’s week is composed of 3 days (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), totally 12 weeks with frontal lessons.
Intermediate exam modules happen during the morning on Mondays throughout frontal lessons’s weeks; Just in this case, lessons must be attended during the afternoon on Monday and they complete on Thursday at 13:00 pm.

About the program:
Degree status: The Casa Loma College MRI Program accredited by ARMRIT and nationally accredited by ABHES. The associate degree program covers a variety of important general education and core courses that enable our students to not only excel but be leaders in the exciting MRI field. The program was developed for the adult learner, running six semesters, with core courses scheduled on Saturdays, and general education courses via online delivery providing students greater flexibility. Throughout the program students are introduced to hands on clinical imaging, patient care, and practicum. To further develop our student’s clinical skills, the last two semesters are spent in a Clinical Externship. Students graduate with the knowledge and skills to sit for both the ARMRIT and ARRT Certification Exams.

Special Imaging Technology Certificate Program in CT/MRI:

  • The Special Imaging program is full-time for each quarter. The cost for the program is subject to change. Since this is a certificate program, financial aid is not available for the CT or MRI certificate programs.
  • Student Capacity: 10-14 students
  • Program Start Date: End of September for CT or CT and MRI combined. Either end of September or end of March for MRI alone.
  • Program Length: Six (6) months or two (2) quarters for CT or MRI alone. Twelve (12) months or four (4) quarters for CT and MRI combined.
  • Admission Requirements: ARRT and CRT (California) registered radiologic technologist, Current CPR certification, A minimum GPA of 2.5 must be maintained in all didactic and clinical coursework. Each student must complete all clinical requirements and class work, including assignments, quizzes, and exams. Venipuncture is highly recommended but can be provided in the program. Current required vaccinations by program start date. A minimum of 12 hours of observation in each modality of interest.

Comments: Students have the option to take both CT and MRI together as a single 12-month (four quarters) program, or the CT or MRI alone as an individual 6-month (two quarters) program. Any option results in the student receiving a University certificate in the modality of choice. Any option is a full-time, 40 hour-per-week program, which includes didactic and clinical experience.

Clinical involves four (4), eight (8) hour days per week.

Classes are scheduled for one day per week and may require the student to be on campus. There are no arrangements for part-time or evening status.

Course Description: Tech SMaRT is a comprehensive magnetic resonance training program in cardiovascular imaging designed especially for the technologist. The four-day course consists of both lectures and hands-on scanning of volunteers. The topics discussed include: LV Function, RV Imaging, Resting Perfusion, Morphology/Black Blood, Cine, Aortic Imaging, Myocardial Viability, Grid Tagging, and Flow Quantification.

Students applying to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Program must be registered as a RT(R) in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) and must possess either an AAS or BA/BS degree in Radiologic Technology. The MRI Program at South Suburban College is a four (4) semester program starting with the summer semester and ending the following summer semester. The program provides didactic classroom and clinical instruction. The clinical portion of the program consists of an orientation to the clinical aspects of MRI, demonstration of the use of the equipment, and an opportunity to participate under close supervision in actual MRI procedures. Although the program is offered as an evening option, the clinical rotation will be scheduled during the day at most of the clinical sites. Student graduate with a Certificate in Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
